Thick and rich homemade pizza sauce that requires 3 minutes of effort and 20 minutes of simmering. You’ll never go for the jarred stuff again after tasting this. Easy, delicious and perfect for your homemade pizza. This makes enough that you can easily use it for two pizzas and still have extra to freeze- very freezer friendly! Adapted from Budget Bytes.

Easy homemade pizza sauce- the ingredients:

The tomato base of this recipe is made of crushed tomatoes and tomato paste. No need to go through the trouble of using fresh tomatoes, this combination tastes amazing! These are added to garlic sautéed in olive oil, and supplemented with oregano, basil, a hint of spice from red pepper flakes. A pinch of sugar offsets the acidity of tomato and I highly recommend it. Salt and pepper to taste and that’s all there is to it!

The steps:

The first step is to sauté the garlic. Then, you add your crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, all your herbs and spices. Let this mixture come to a boil then you reduce the heat to a simmer and simmer for 20 minutes. This really allows all those good flavors to develop.

Using your easy homemade pizza sauce:

Obviously, you use this for pizza sauce, and I also like to dip my finished pizza crusts in extra sauce. You can use this tomato sauce as a base for meatball sandwiches, eggplant or chicken parmigiana, or anywhere else you need a good Italian flavored thick tomato sauce.

Storing any extra:

Let the sauce cool completely in the freezer first, then portion off any extras in small freezer safe ziploc bags. Instead of freezing all the sauce in one big bag, this makes it easier to just thaw off as much as you need for one pizza. I’d eyeball about 1/3 cup of sauce in each ziploc bag which should be more than enough for a good saucy pizza. Freeze for 4-6 months to retain quality.

  • 2 cloves minced garlic

  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • black pepper to taste
  • pinch red pepper flakes, optional

Instructions

  • Add the olive oil to a saucepan and heat over medium. Add the garlic cloves and cook 1-2 minutes or until soft and fragrant.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, basil, oregano, some pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir to combine.
  • Cover the pot, let it come to a simmer, then simmer for 15-20 minutes on low heat.

Notes

Recipe adapted from Budget Bytes.

To freeze any extra sauce, allow it to cool in the fridge first, then portion it off (I usually do 1/3-1/2 cup portions) in freezer safe ziploc bags. That way you can thaw each individual portion as desired. You can thaw in the fridge, or place bag in some hot water for faster thawing.
