Salted Caramel Apple Dutch Baby

A puffy golden brown oven baked pancake topped with cinnamon coated apple slices and drizzled with the perfect homemade salted caramel sauce. Tastes like apple pie in a skillet, breakfast can’t get any more special than this caramel apple dutch baby!

I fell in love with dutch babies after making this recipe. An easier pancake that happens to be giant and doesn’t require standing over the stove for 20 minutes flipping? Sign me up! Dutch babies are as easy as blending together a few ingredients and pouring them in a hot skillet. This skillet gets baked at a high temperature, giving a beautiful puffy golden brown delight.

How to make a dutch baby:

First step is heating your oven. The dutch baby must go in a hot oven to rise properly. While it’s heating, in a blender (or vigorously by hand), combine all ingredients except for butter. Eggs, flour, milk, sugar, vanilla and nutmeg all get combined.

Butter gets placed in an ovenproof skillet and this skillet goes into the oven until the butter melts. Then, your batter gets poured into the same skillet, apple slices arranged on top, and this goes in the oven for 20-25 minutes until puffy and golden brown and delicious.

How to make homemade salted caramel sauce?

Jar of rose water and orange blossom water salted caramel sauce with a spoon dripping some salted caramel off of it

It’s so much easier than you think. I have a whole post on just that! I love adding orange blossom water and rose water to my salted caramel for just a hint of fragrance, but you can completely omit those and follow the rest of the recipe for a standard salted caramel.

Why add apples to a dutch baby?

My experiments with dutch babies thus far have all been super simple. I top them with maple syrup and fresh berries and yes that is DELICIOUS. However, I wanted something that worked for autumn and there are few better flavor matches for me than salted caramel and apples, so I used those in this recipe. It came out so good- my daughter kept telling me how much it tasted like apple pie, one of her favorites. I totally see it! It’s like a 20 minute apple pie for breakfast!

I always tend to use granny smith or green apples in my desserts because I love the contrast that the tartness of their flavor gives. Feel free to switch the apple type up to your preferred one.

Dutch babies are best enjoyed immediately, while they are still puffed up, as they will fall, but I stored a slice in the fridge and microwaved it the next day and I can’t deny I enjoyed every bite. Salted caramel apple dutch babies should be your next breakfast!

Ingredients

For the salted caramel sauce:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream (whipping cream)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp each rose water and orange blossom water (optional)

For the apples:

  • 1 green apple, peeled and very thinly sliced (about 16 slices)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder

For the dutch baby:

  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup flour 62 g
  • 1/2 cup milk 117 g
  • 1 tbp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch nutmeg, optional
  • 4 tbsp butter 57g

Instructions

For the salted caramel sauce:

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and the water. Stir, then place the saucepan on the stove over medium high heat. Let it cook without stirring until sugar dissolves, then turns into the amber brown color of caramel. This will take around 10 minutes.
  • Removing the pan from the heat, drizzle in the heavy cream slowly whisking while doing so. Return to the heat, and continue whisking. The caramel might seize up initially but will then smooth out over the heat.
  • Add the butter, and whisk until combined. Remove from the heat, and whisk in the salt, rose water, and orange blossom water if using. Set aside to cool while you continue with the recipe (Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for two weeks or so.)

For the apples:

  • Toss the apple slices with cinnamon powder until evenly coated. Set aside.

For the dutch baby:

  • Preheat the oven to 225 C (425 F)
  • Combine the eggs, sugar, milk, flour, vanilla extract, and nutmeg and blend until smooth. You can also just whisk thoroughly by hand.
  • In a heavy 10 inch skillet or baking pan, put the butter. Place it in the oven until the butter melts. watching carefully so it doesn’t burn. One butter is melted, remove pan from oven and pour in all the batter. Layer the apple slices evenly on top of the batter, leaving the edges of the pan empty, much like a pizza crust.
  • Return the pan to the oven, and bake for 20 minutes until puffed and golden. Reduce oven temperature to 150 C (300 F) and bake for 5 minutes longer.
  • Drizzle with salted caramel sauce, top with your choice of ice cream, whipped cream, icing sugar and pecans/walnuts if desired and serve immediately.

Instagram post 2200087754121825989_296112771 Just look at how cute @fattobahrain ‘s special national day pasta is 🇧🇭! Spinach and ricotta stuffed ravioli with a creamy pesto sauce- absolutely delicious: Fatto always does the trick for me! And on that note, happy National Day to beautiful Bahrain, the place I’m blessed enough to call home. My friends and I have had the discussion before of which country in the world we dream about living in if we weren’t tied down to certain responsibilities. They come up with a range of exotic options but my answer is always emphatically Bahrain. I love you Bahrain!

Instagram post 2199426804834227841_296112771 Who else is feeling the hot chocolate weather? I was inspired by my visit to @theloft.bh and purchase of their super popular double walled blackstone mugs (now on sale for 3.280BD for a set of two! I know a lot of you asked me about the price). The entire store is on sale so go in and fulfill your wishlist📝
This thick and decadent hot chocolate is made with 3 ingredients in approximately 5 minutes. No sugar is added, the chocolate shines for itself. An even easier loose adaptation of @jacquestorres ‘s famous recipe!! Make this and tell me what you think ☕️ ❄️ Ingredients:
3 cups of whole milk
1 heaped tbsp cornstarch
1 cup (150g) good quality dark chocolate, 55-60%
Method:
Bring the milk to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium high heat, then whisk in cornstarch until dissolved. Keep whisking and let it boil for 30 seconds or so. Reduce heat to medium, add the chocolate, and whisk to combine until chocolate has melted and dissolved. Let chocolate milk mixture boil for another minute, whisking vigorously. Pour into mugs and serve warm, topped with whipped cream and marshmallows😍. I love these mugs for coffee, and now for hot chocolate!

Instagram post 2198572670291644763_296112771 Finally got around to visiting @themerchanthousebahrain , an elegant boutique hotel located near Bab al Bahrain. Parking trouble aside, when you enter the hotel it’s an artsy and modern little oasis in the middle of a bustling souk. I went to their onsite restaurant, Indigo, for breakfast. They are known for their rooftop terrace, but it was raining so we sat inside. The vibe was so nice. I loved the decor, the artwork the quirkiness. This goes for the lobby and cozy library located on the premises too- I would definitely try their library afternoon tea just for the setting! Swipe to see more. As for the food, it was simple and good. We tried the French toast, blueberry pancakes, and a great cappuccino. The portions could definitely have been bigger, but they were all enjoyable if not necessarily memorable.

Instagram post 2197152259536478432_296112771 Guys. The forge. Delicious!! I had no idea that @theforge.bh opened up in Riffa (Calidus center, same complex as @kidzvillebh and @black22bh ). The cool thing is it opened up in @seedbahrain ‘s location, but the branch itself offers both The Forge’s menu and Seeds. Today, I was there for aaaall the indulgence. I tried something from every category. Swipe for all the goodness!
-Burgers: the BLT burger and the Mexican. Hit the spot! I loved that smashed griddled patty with caramelized crispy edges. The BLT was completely nostalgic, tasted like the burger of my childhood. The Mexican was super juicy and tasty with the addition of guacamole.
-6 hour slow cooked brisket. Slightly sweet, perfectly tender and shredded with no fat bits! A winner.
-The spicy chicken slider. This was excellent. I ate it cold because I took so long taking photos and it was still crispy and delicious. And I am not a chicken person!
-Sides and dessert: onion rings were probably the best I’ve had in Bahrain, so well seasoned and crunchy with a great homemade herby ranch dip.
Loaded fries: really good, but even the regular fries hit the spot so I’d probably go for those to save more precious tummy real estate. Brisket croquettes were stuffed with shredded brisket and cheese, so clearly they were a yes.
Finally, my custom made milkshake! You can customize your own but I highly recommend you give my ELC shake a whirl. It’s vanilla ice cream with brownies, salted caramel and shortbread. Deeeelicious 😋.
I love that this is a local homegrown brand, and highly recommend a visit to @theforge.bh for your next cheat day. They also have a food truck to cater your events (I’ve been asked about this). Let me know what your picks off the menu would be and head over to my story for full coverage! {brand partner}

Instagram post 2196588697600560910_296112771 Green juice is my husband and I’s new obsession. It makes us feel so righteous and millennial 💪🏼🌱 .We started off by throwing in basically whatever we have in the fridge but now we’ve come to a more fine tuned formula. Here’s what we put in to give us a good liter or so of juice (enough for four glasses): Ingredients
3-4 cucumbers
1 bunch parsley
1 lime
1 knob of ginger
8-10 celery stalks
4 green apples
Instructions:
Wash fruits and vegetables. Cut them in half if necessary to fit in the juice tube.
Place in the juice in the order listed. Drink immediately if possible, or chill in the fridge tightly covered until you are ready to drink.

Instagram post 2195925680059639526_296112771 I returned to an old favorite, @lanternsbahrain after much too long to try their newly launched thali platter. I loved it! 5 bd (non shareable) for a platter with the perfect amount of their bestselling curries, basmati rice, naan, papad, raita, chopped salad, chicken tikka, and ras malai. In the first photo is their vegetarian thali option that swaps out the chicken tikka for a spinach patty type thing which I really enjoyed, as well as the lamb rogan josh and butter chicken for aloo gobi and additional vegetarian curries . I actually loved both platters equally, and can totally see myself ordering the vegetarian option in the future because I’m obsessed with paneer! So yummy, great amount of food and at a great price, I recommend this platter wholeheartedly! Available Sunday through Wednesday in Adliya, Budaiya and Riffa branches 🥘.
